out of the blueというイディオムを取り上げます。手持ちの辞書で調べてみると、「突然（の）、ふってわいたように｛な｝、予告なしに」という意味になります。Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary, 11th Editionをチェックしてみると、 ‘without advance notice : UNEXPECTEDLY’と定義されていました。さらに念のため、ODOでも見てみると、’without warning; unexpectedly’と記載されていました。余談ですが、類似表現として、out of a clear blue skyとも言うことができます。
