今回注目する表現は、the gauntlet has been thrownです。gauntletは「籠手」という意味がありますが、throw[fling] down the gauntletという形で「挑戦する」(『ウィズダム英和辞典 第二版』三省堂)という意味があるそうです。一方、投げられた籠手を拾い上げる事で、take[pick] up the gauntlet「挑戦に応じる,弁護に立つ」(『ジーニアス英和辞典 第4版』大修館書店)という意味になります。WEBでも調べてみると、この表現の語源についての記述があり、pick up the gauntlet「◆【語源】中世において、よろいのこて(gauntletまたはglove)を落とすことは、相手への挑戦を意味し、それを拾い上げる(take up, pick up)ことは、その挑戦に応じることを意味した。」(英辞郎 on the WEB)と書かれていました。
