a fair goとRule Britannia

イギリスの市民権を得るためのテストを通過するためのテキストの第三版が１月の後半に出版されたようです。そのことに関する記事がThe Economistにありました。引用は最終パラグラフなのですが、綺麗にオチがついていて、やっぱこの国はジョークが好きなんだなあ、と思ってしまいます。

Patriotism recycled - How to be British

Australia’s textbook reminds its migrants of the importance of “a fair go”, the principle that hard work and talent should always count for more than wealth or connections. America’s asks people to memorise the deadline for the filing of income-tax returns. Britain emphasises the importance of being a good neighbour. What does this mean? “Try to keep your garden tidy, and only put your refuse bags and bins on the street or in communal areas if they are due to be collected.” Rule Britannia.

さて、今回は２つ扱います。まずAustraliaのa fair goです。こちらは、ベジマイトやBBQと同じくらい重要なもので「近隣のすべての人を平等に扱おうとする精神」という言葉で説明できます。私もオーストラリア時代は、幾度と無くホストファミリーやmates達のfair goに助けられました。(cf. Australians value a 'fair go' highest

次いでRule Britanniaです。こちらはCool Britanniaじゃないの？と思われる方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、それはこちらのRule Britanniaをもじったものです。Rule Britanniaとは、Oxford Guide to British and American Cultureによると「トマス・アーンとジェイムス・トムソンによって1740年に書かれたイングランドの愛国歌で、特にイングランドの誇りを示す歌である。プロムのラスト・ナイトにて歌われる。歌詞の中の次の２連はほとんどのイングランド人が知っている。」（試訳筆者）

Rule, Britannia! Britannia rules the waves;
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves

この歌詞に関して言えば、結構新聞の見出しにも使われているので、知っている方も多いでしょう。(Othello)
