ご指名質問を頂きました。以下のdistinctionの意味は何でしょうか。

distinctionには「栄誉」などの意味があり、ここで使われているthis embarrassing distinctionは「この恥ずべき博士号」という訳が考えられます。

さて『ウィズダム英和辞典』の第３義には「（単数で）栄誉、称号、勲章、優秀賞」とあります。また、「a (the) dubious distinctionで不名誉を表す」ということも覚えておきたいです。

またLDOCEでは第３義に注目したいと思います。

3 BEING SPECIAL [singular] the quality of being special in some way: have/ earn/ achieve etc the distinction of doing something
4 RESULT [C,U] a special mark given to a student whose work is excellent

記事を見てみるとちょうどLDOCEの第３義にあるようなhave the distinctionのかたちを採っています。ここで強調しておきたいのは、distinctionには「栄誉」という意味があり、結構な頻度で使われるということです。

例えば、本日のNYTでもFor Hagel, a Distinction Comes With an Asteriskにて、「称号」という意味でのdistinctionが使用されています。
