常盤新平さん 死去

直木賞作家で、米現代文学などの翻訳や洗練されたエッセーでも知られた常盤新平さんが22日午後、亡くなりました。またまたひとつの時代が終わった感を抱きました。『遠いアメリカ』(今では講談社文庫に入っています)をはじめとする常盤新平さんの本(エッセー、翻訳書)を見かけたら、迷わずに買って読むこと。(UG)

Prize-Winning Writer, Translator Shinpei Tokiwa Dies

Shinpei Tokiwa, a prominent Japanese writer and translator who won the Naoki award for popular literature, died of pneumonia at a Tokyo hospital Tuesday. He was 81. 
   

Born in the northeastern prefecture of Iwate, Tokiwa worked as chief editor of a mystery magazine for Hayakawa Publishing Corp. before becoming a freelance writer.
   

As a translator and essayist, Tokiwa introduced U.S. culture and customs, ranging from contemporary literature to journalism and sports.
   He is known for his essays, which featured a refined style, and his translations of U.S. and British literature and nonfiction.
   

His notable translations included "All the President's Men," written by journalists about the Watergate scandal, which led to the resignation of U.S. President Richard Nixon.
