The original AKB48 troupe now numbers 87 members (that's including "trainees"), making it the largest pop group in the world. Among these teenagers and 20-somethings, cut-throat competition has arisen alongside gross disparities between the fortunes of the most popular, the less so, and those whose day on the big stage just never comes.

今回取り上げる表現はcut-throatです。見た目の「のどを切る」というところから想像はしやすいですが、「殺人の、凶暴な」、「（競争など）激しい、殺人的な」という意味です。（Weblio辞書）また、Oxford Dictionaries On-lineには"fierce and intense; involving the use of ruthless measures"と載っていました。この文章ではもちろん「激しい」という意味ですが、辞書の意味やこの記事から、「ものすごく激しい競争」というのが伝わってきます。他にもcut each other’s throatsで「（競争で）共倒れになる」や、cut one’s own throatで「自滅を招く」というものがありましたが(『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』大修館)、どちらもcut-throatを知っていればわかりやすい表現です。
