Snowless in Seattle? Emerald City breaks snowball fight record

SEATTLE -- Neil Bergquist's dream was to have a snowball fight in Seattle this past Saturday.  Without a single flake in sight, you might say that dream didn't have a snowball's chance in -- well, Seattle.

But Bergquist and his buddies found a way.  With help from KLB construction, they hauled 160,000 pounds of snow -- 34 truckloads -- from Snoqualmie Pass to a cozy spot at Seattle Center, in the shadow of the Space Needle.

Dubbed "Snow Day," the event was a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County.  Companies donated money in exchange for a little space to build a snow fort.

After the fort-building competition, participants took part in a giant snowball fight.  The goal was to break the Guinness World Record for largest snowball fight, an honor that belonged to Korea with 5,387 people.

The snowball fight was a painful affair at times, with many of the snowballs transforming into ice.  Several participants cried out in pain after getting hit.

But in the end, 5,834 people officially took part in the fight, which means Seattle now holds the world record.

この記事で気になったのがin the shadow of (〜の影で目立たない,〜に隠れて)という表現です。これはunder the shadow of の間違いでは?文脈では「スペースニードルタワーの近くの」という意味で使われていると思います。そうするとunderだと思うのですが,それとも米英語ではこんな使い方もできるのでしょうか。ちょっと気になりました。(UG)
