関東地方では気象庁の予報が当たらず７年ぶりの大雪となりましたが、英国でも交通機関の影響が懸念されています。

Much of Britain has woken up to snow this morning with up to 10cm expected to fall in some areas prompting fears of travel chaos.
The first wave of snow will hit most of the country and some eastern parts of Wales but a second heavier band will fall over central and eastern England later in the day.
今日はbandという表現を見てみます。音楽好きの私としてはすぐ、カタカナ英語としても使われている「バンド」あるいは「演奏者の一団」を思い浮かべてしまうのですが、勿論文中ではこの意味で使われておりません。ここでは低気圧の雲の固まりを別の形で表現した単語になります。
早速調べてみると、’a stripe, line, or elongated area of a different colour, texture, or composition from its surroundings’ Oxford Dictionaries Onlineと出ています。またLDOCEでも調べてみると、’a flat, narrow piece of something with one end joined to the other to form a circle’というように定義されていました。さらに、手持ちの辞書でもチェックしてみると、「帯（状のもの）」（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第３版』大修館）と記載されていることにも納得がいきます(Shou-VR*)
