Shohei Otani, the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters’ top draft pick, poses outside the team’s dormitory in Kamagaya, Chiba Prefecture, on Wednesday with the team mascot. Otani, who starred on the mound but was also an accomplished hitter at Iwate Prefecture’s Hanamaki Higashi High School, will be allowed to pursue a two-prong approach to his pro-career, part of the deal that persuaded Otani to join the Fighters and abandon his original plan of signing with a major league team. He was one of seven rookies who moved into the dorm.

見出しの(a)home away from homeは直訳すると「家から家へ離れる」となりますが、米・豪用法の口語表現で「我が家のように楽しい所」という意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版、大修館書店)です。英用法では(a)home from homeとなります。Cambridg Advanced Learner’s Dictionaryには"a place where you feel as comfortable as you do in your own home"と定義されています。大谷選手にとって野球だけに集中できる環境がhome away from homeとなるのでしょう。(EnDough)
