pan out

Here's one more reason to be glad those 2012 Maya doomsday worries didn't pan out ― Maya scholarship, thankfully, just kept on going.

Wiktionaryには、"(idiomatic, usually intransitive) To succeed; to proceed according to plan; to result or end up."
一応語源も調べてみると、Answers.comには、"The phrase pans out originated with the California gold rush, when people used pans to sort out debris and gravel from streams beds in seach of gold nuggets. If they found gold, then they had panned out." (Astroriver)
