Heart start new year on winning note
Melbourne Heart climbed off the bottom of the ladder with a 2-1 win over Newcastle at AAMI Park to leave Jets' coach Gary van Egmond fuming.
Van Egmond was unable to contain his anger after a tense first half, having argued strongly with match officials and followed them down the players' race to continue the discussion.
And the Jets' star import Emile Heskey capped an unhappy match by arguing with the referee after full-time.
The Heart scored just their fourth win of the season to go to 15 points, two ahead of Sydney FC, while the Jets remain on 16 points after suffering their eighth defeat in 14 matches.
Heart coach John Aloisi's men held a 2-1 advantage at half-time and were able to defend their lead in a scoreless second term in front of 5,641 fans.

on winning noteという表現ですが、手持ちの辞書にはありませんでした。そこでWeb上で調べていくと、なかなか見つけることが出来ませんでしたが、どうやらend ［finish］ on a winning ［great, successful］ noteで「成功裏［好調］に終わる」という意味のようです。（英辞朗 on the Web）

見出しの訳は、「MelbourneのHeartというチームは、新年のスタートを成功裏に始める」つまり、「MelbourneのHeartというチームは、好調に新年のスタートをきる」となるのではないでしょうか。

オーストラリアにはサッカー好きの人があまりいないように思います。サッカーよりもオーストラリア生まれのAFL「オーストラリアン・ルールズ・フットボール（Australian Football League）」のほうが、圧倒的人気があるでしょう。日本でお馴染みのラグビーは15人制に対しAFLは18人制であり、ぶつかり合ったり、ジャンプしたりとかなり激しいもので、独特のルールを持ちます。(Nat)
