To cap it all

The Economistには正力松太郎氏の記事がありました。本文では、オーソン・ウェルズの『市民ケーン』のプロットになぞらえて、正力氏の人生が描かれています。最後にある問題提起に関しても我々はもう少し考えなければならないのかもしれません。

さて、簡単な表現ですが、to cap it allという表現を覚えておくと便利だな、と思います。このto cap it allは、イギリス英語で「さらに、その上、挙句の果てに」と日本語で訳されます。LDOCEでは、“used before a statement to say that something is the last in a series of annoying, unpleasant, or funny events”と定義されています。これはおそらく他動詞capのイギリス英語の用法に「を凌駕する、凌ぐ」という意味や、新聞用語の用法として「〜を仕上げる、最後を締めくくる」という意味から転じて、to cap it allが「挙句の果てに」という意味になったのだと考えられます。(Othello)
