Nationalist jailed for hate campaign against firm that used S Korean actress in ads
TOKYO — An Osaka court has sentenced a nationalist to a year in jail after a hate campaign against a pharmaceutical firm which had a South Korean actress as its public face, reports said Tuesday.
Hitoshi Nishimura, 44, and three other men barged into the headquarters of Rohto Pharmaceutical in Osaka and angrily demanded to know why the company was using Kim Tae-Hee in its commercials, media said.
Nishimura claimed Kim was an anti-Japanese activist who has been involved in a campaign asserting Seoul’s sovereignty over disputed islands located between the two nations.
In footage of the confrontation that was posted on the Internet, Nishimura rails against company officials and claims to represent “angry Japanese throughout the country.”
Nishimura was jailed for one year for using threatening behavior, the Sankei Shimbun and broadcaster TBS said. The website of a rightwing group to which he is affiliated said he plans to appeal.
No information was given on the other three men involved.
Incidents of anti-Korean harassment by rightwingers reportedly rose after President Lee Myung-Bak in August visited the islands known as Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan.
Small but vocal campaigns have been organised against broadcasters that screen South Korean dramas or against community events mounted by some of the more than 500,000 ethnic Koreans who live in Japan.
