LDP on course to return to power, giving Abe premiership
The Liberal Democratic Party is on course to win an overall majority in Japan's general election Sunday, returning to power after three years in opposition on stronger defense and conservative nuclear energy policies, Kyodo News exit polls indicate.
Victory for the LDP would end the government led by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's Democratic Party of Japan and set to stage for LDP chief Shinzo Abe, who has talked tough on China and called for radical monetary easing, to resume the premiership that he previously held five years ago.
According to the exit polls, the LDP, which had ruled the country until 2009 almost continuously since its establishment in 1955, is expected to win by a landslide in the 480-seat House of Representatives election, while the DPJ is likely to suffer a crushing defeat.
