tangible cultural heritage

Tokyo Tower set for cultural heritage status

The Council for Cultural Affairs advised the culture minister Friday to register 126 new properties, including Tokyo Tower, as items of tangible cultural heritage.

The registrations are expected to be made soon in line with the council's recommendations to Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister Makiko Tanaka.

Built in 1958, the 333-meter Tokyo Tower in Minato Ward was once the world's tallest free-standing steel tower, beating the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which is about 320 meters. It held the top spot until the 540-meter Ostankino Tower in Moscow was built in 1967.

Tokyo Tower, seen as a symbol of the nation's resurgence after World War II and marking the start of the postwar economic boom, was designed by Tachu Naito, who was also involved in designing the Osaka landmark Tsutenkaku Tower and the no longer extant Kabuki-za theater in Tokyo.

The cumulative number of visitors to Tokyo Tower is expected to reach 170 million in 2013, according to the company that manages the tower. Other properties that were recommended for registration as cultural heritage assets include the main hall of Renkeiji, a temple in Aichi Prefecture, and Izumohinomisaki lighthouse in Shimane Prefecture.
