arterial shipping routes

(UG)

Airlines, ships brace for missile

Some shipping firms and airlines have changed their routes--and will even steer clear of certain areas--during the period in which North Korea plans to launch a missile.

Pyongyang initially said it would launch a "satellite"--believed by other countries to be a long-range ballistic missile--between 7 a.m. and noon on an unspecified day during the period of Dec. 10-22. On Monday, North Korea extended the period until Dec. 29.

The waters over which the missile is anticipated to travel include arterial shipping routes with a heavy volume of traffic from tankers transporting crude oil from the Middle East and freighters linking Asia with Europe.

During the period, major shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. has barred all its vessels from three areas--including the Yellow Sea and the Pacific Ocean off the Philippines--where parts of the missile are expected to fall. "We'll take extra care to handle whatever safety threat might emerge," a
Mitsui O.S.K. spokesman said.

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., another leading shipping firm, has suspended passage through the waters during the specified period.
