生産コストの低い海外に製造ラインを置くことは，大手電機メーカーにとって今や常識となっていますが，そんな中，Appleはアメリカにも生産ラインを設けるようです。
今回注目したのはlineという単語。見出しのlineは「生産ライン」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）のことを指していると考えられますが，本文のits existing linesは可算名詞であることから他の意味で用いられています。そこで英英辞書で調べてみると，lineには可算名詞でa type of goods for sale in a shop（LDOCE）という意味があることがわかりました。『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』（同上）にも「（型大きさ値段品質に幅のある）製品」とあります。line自体にgoods（製品）の意味が含まれていることは押さえておこうと思います。（Koyamamoto）

Apple to produce line of Macs in the U.S. next year
NEW YORK (AP) — Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company will produce one of its existing lines of Mac computers in the United States next year.
Cook made the comments in part of an interview taped for NBC's "Rock Center," but aired Thursday morning on "Today" and posted on the network's website.
