Metro expressway to remove suspended ceilings in Tokyo's Haneda Tunnel

Metropolitan Expressway Co. (Shutoko) plans to remove suspended ceilings in the Haneda Tunnel near Haneda airport in Tokyo's Ota Ward, following the discovery of a fracture of a metal fitting during an emergency inspection.

The company inspected the tunnel on Dec. 4 and 5 after the collapse of a ceiling inside the Sasago Tunnel on the Chuo Expressway in Otsuki, Yamanashi Prefecture on Dec. 2 which left nine people dead.

Shutoko announced Dec. 6 that the fracture was found during the emergency inspection. The expressway operator says it immediately repaired the fitting along with another fractured part which was found during a regular inspection in 2006.

According to Shutoko, the Haneda Tunnel on No. 1 Haneda Route linking Haneda airport and the heart of the Japanese capital opened in 1964.

The 300-meter-long tunnel is equipped with two 20-meter-long suspended ceilings. Each ceiling has inner wall fasteners and two T-shaped steel fittings securing 162 concrete ceiling panels, and weighs about 21 tons. Each T-shaped steel fitting is hung from an upper portion of the tunnel with seven 150-centimeter stainless steel suspension rods which are 19 millimeters in diameter each.
