Falen trees block roads, blackouts affect 40,000 households

SAPPORO--A snowstorm caused by a developing low-pressure system passing through Hokkaido struck a wide swath of the region Tuesday, causing damage including blackouts that affected more than 40,000 households, mainly in areas on the Pacific side.
According to Hokkaido Electric Power Co., up to 41,000 households were affected by the blackouts in Muroran and other cities, while 58 flights had been canceled as of 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Chitose Airport near Sapporo.
A gust with a maximum instantaneous velocity of 143 kph was recorded at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday in Muroran, according to the Sapporo District Meteorological Observatory.

見出しから英語表現を拾います。buffetはみなさんもご存じの「ビュッフェ」としてもはや日本語化している単語で「バイキング式レストラン、セルフサービス[バイキング]式の食事」という意味が一般的ですが、ここでは動詞として使われているのでその訳は当てはまりません。buffetは動詞では「〈風・波などが〉〈船〉をもむ、激しく揺さぶる」という意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』、第4版、大修館書店)があります。さらにはそこから「〈不幸・運命・乗り物〉が〈人〉をもてあそぶ」という意味(ibid)もある事はチェックして覚えたいところです。もちろん名詞では「打撃、不幸、(運命などに)もまれること」という意味がある事は念のため。(EnDough)
