purification

民主党では、幕府によるキリシタンのあぶりだしになぞらえて、”踏み絵”と呼ばれる党員の調査が行われています。

踏み絵はそのまま訳しても、"a fumie, a plate with a picture of Christ or the Virgin Mary used by the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period to identify Christians by making them step on it."(『アドヴァンストファイバリット和英辞典』)などと、正確ですが、どうしても長くなってしまいます。

(UG)

DPJ may subject ticket to 'purification'

The Democratic Party of Japan leadership is embarking on a "purification drive" of its members, but this attempt to unite the party ahead of the House of Representatives election could instead worsen its internal disarray.

With an increasing number of its members leaving because of differences in views over key policies, the DPJ is making it a prerequisite for candidates for the upcoming House of Representatives election to comply with the party's policy lines during the campaign.

"I heard that the party leadership is talking about having the promotion of Japan's participation in the TPP [Trans-Pacific Partnership trade framework] negotiations be entered in its manifesto, and candidates who do not toe the party line over the TPP talks will not be officially put on the ticket," former farm minister Masahiko Yamada said Monday with dissatisfaction.

He made the remark in response to questions by reporters, following his submission of a notice that he would leave the party earlier on the same day.
