Shoppers hit the stores for Black Friday deals
4:59AM EST November 23. 2012 - Shoppers kicked off the Black Friday holiday shopping weekend by flocking to stores in hopes of snagging bargains as many retailers opened earlier than ever on Thanksgiving night this year.
But while some shoppers were lined up or in tents outside stores waiting for in-store bargains, there was a bit of a "post-pie shopping frenzy" on store websites on Thanksgiving Day, says Jay Henderson, strategy director for IBM Smarter Commerce.
As of 9 p.m. ET Thursday, online sales were up more than 18% over last Thanksgiving, according to the"IBM Benchmark," which tracks the websites of more than 500 leading U.S. retailers.
