A knife-wielding man was holed up at a shinkin bank branch in Toyokawa, Aichi Prefecture, on Thursday afternoon, apparently holding five people as hostages, police said.
According to the police, the man is demanding supplies of food for 10 people, two cases of drinks and a loudspeaker, and access to reporters, while demanding that the Cabinet of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda resign.
The police received an emergency notification from Toyokawa Shinkin Bank's Zoshi branch through its emergency system at around 2:20 p.m. The man was holding hostage a female customer and four branch employees -- one male and three female, the police and the bank said.
