Japan Incurs 549 B. Yen in Trade Deficit for Oct.
Tokyo, Nov. 21 (Jiji Press)--Japan incurred a customs-cleared trade deficit of 549.0 billion yen for October, larger than the year-before deficit of 283.0 billion yen, the Ministry of Finance said Wednesday. The latest result compared with the median estimate of 337.0 billion yen in deficit in a Jiji Press survey of 25 economic research institutes.
Exports fell 6.5 pct to 5,150.0 billion yen, and imports dropped 1.6 pct to 5,699.0 billion yen, the ministry said in a preliminary report. In trade with the United States, Japan's trade surplus grew 7.0 pct to 416.4 billion yen. Exports were up 3.1 pct and imports edged up 0.1 pct. In trade with mainland China, Japan posted a trade deficit of 406.5 billion yen, up 72.5 pct, with exports sinking 11.6 pct while imports rising 3.6 pct.
