Ex-PNP Leader Kamei Announces New Party

Tokyo, Nov. 19 (Jiji Press)--Shizuka Kamei, former leader of the People's New Party, and former agriculture minister Masahiko Yamada said Monday that they will launch a new political party ahead of the Dec. 16 election for the House of Representatives.
The new party will oppose consumption tax hikes set for April 2014 and October 2015 and Japan's participation in Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade talks, according to Kamei and Yamada.
The party will be headed by Yamada, with Kamei to become secretary-general. Its launch will be reported to the internal affairs ministry on Tuesday, according to them.
The party plans to call for a partnership with other parties which oppose Japan's TPP participation in view of a possible merger.
Kamei did not elaborate at a joint news conference whether they have secured five former lawmakers so that their group can be regarded as a political party.

secretary-generalは「事務総長、書記長」という意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版、大修館書店)ですが、この新党では「幹事長」にあたります。「〜の代表になる」はrepresentやbe chosen as a head/ leader of~などと認識していましたが、be headed by〜と表現することもできるのですね。こちらの方がheadには「率いる、〜の先頭に立つ」という(ibid)意味があるので、「進んで代表になった」というニュアンスが含まれているような気がします。どちらも基本的な表現ですが、私には日本語では咄嗟に出て来ない表現だったので、確認の為取り上げてみました。(EnDough)
