withdraw

(UG)

Japanese Runners Allowed in Beijing Marathon

Beijing, Nov. 11 (Jiji Press)--The organizing committee of the 2012 Beijing Marathon has withdrawn its earlier decision to ban Japanese runners from the race.

The committee added Japan to the list of nationalities that registrants choose from on the event's official Web site.

The committee previously banned Japanese runners from the Nov. 25 event, citing safety concerns. The move was taken as China's response to tensions with Japan over disputed islands in the East China Sea, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

The committee reversed the decision after it came under criticism from Chinese media and on the Internet while the Japanese embassy requested that the matter be handled appropriately.

An official at China's track and field association told a local newspaper that the Beijing Marathon welcomes runners from across the world.
