14 suffer minor burns on Tokyo subway after bottle held by woman bursts

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A bottle held by a female passenger burst just past midnight Friday on a Tokyo subway car when it was standing at a station, causing minor injuries to 14 people, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

They are believed to have suffered burns on their skins caused by an alkali liquid that splashed from the bottle after it ruptured at around 0:20 a.m. on the train at Hongo-sanchome station on Tokyo Metro Co.'s Marunouchi line in the capital's Bunkyo Ward.

The police quoted the woman as saying, "The detergent given to me from an acquaintance burst out when I shook it."

Those injured were near the woman, the police said, ruling out foul play. A detergent-like liquid was in the bottle, the police said.

All the passengers got off the train at the station and the train cars were moved to a rail yard. More than 10 fire engines were deployed at the scene that witnesses said was briefly thrown into chaos.
