Twitter-verse falls for faux Yamanaka after Nobel announcement
When Kyoto University professor Shinya Yamanaka heard that he had won the Nobel Prize in Medicine, he posted an overjoyed message on Twitter subsequently re-tweeted more than 38,000 times. The only problem is, professor Yamanaka doesn't tweet.
It's no wonder the Twitter-sphere fell for the faux Yamanaka. The icon attached to the account is a headshot of the stem cell pioneer, and the short profile text uses Yamanaka's real job title, director of Kyoto University's Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA). Only two tweets have been posted from the account since August this year, beginning with "I've just started Twitter."
The fake Yamanaka's most recent tweet, however, spread like wildfire. Posted at just past 9 p.m. on Oct. 8, it read: "I've won the Nobel Prize!" One day and more than 38,000 re-tweets later, the account had some 17,000 followers.
According to CiRA, Yamanaka was in fact speaking with reporters at the time of the "I won" tweet. "This is obviously not professor Yamanaka, and we'd be in some difficulty if the fake account creates a strange image of him," a CiRA representative stated.
