今朝の「読売新聞」の1面記事には驚かされました。中山教授が次の段階と言っていた，ｉＰＳ細胞（新型万能細胞）の臨床応用が行われていたことが書かれていたからです。米ハーバード大学の日本人研究者らが６人の患者に心筋の細胞を作り、重症の心不全患者に細胞移植する治療を実施したことが書かれていたからです。まさにスクープでした。ちなみに夕刊には臨床応用をした森口客員講師のインタビューが載っていました。

英文記事を読んでいて思ったのがこのartificialという単語です。artificialというとartificial flowers（造花）のように，「自然な（natural）に対して人造の」という意味が先に浮かびます。つまり，「人工，模造」などの感覚です。しかしながら，iPS cellsは人の手が入っていることは間違いないのですが，造花的な別のものではなく，患者の細胞を初期化して作ったものなのですよね。つまりinducedなわけですが，artificialというとどうもピンときません。わたしの脳内辞書もreprogramする必要がありますね。なんだかこんがらがっちゃった。（UG）

iPS cells used for 1st time in clinical applications in U.S.

NEW YORK (Kyodo) -- A team of researchers has transplanted artificial cardiac muscle cells developed from multipurpose stem cells into six heart-failure patients in the United States in the world's first clinical application of such cells, one of them said Wednesday.
The researchers developed the muscle cells from induced pluripotent stem cells produced from the patients' livers and transplanted them to the patients, Hisashi Moriguchi, a visiting professor at Harvard University from Japan, said.

A 34-year-old American male patient who was the first to receive the transplant in February now has normal heart function and has been discharged from the hospital, Moriguchi said.
