First soprano in space: Singer Sarah Brightman 'pays over £30m' to become next space tourist to visit space station

The classical star will join the three-person crew on board the Soyuz rocket to travel to the International Space Station in 2014

Singer Sarah Brightman hopes to become the first soprano in space after revealing she will become the next space tourist. The classical star has reportedly paid more than £30 million to join the next trip to the International Space Station.

The former wife of composer Andrew Lloyd Weber will be part of a three-person crew aboard the Soyuz rocket after being chosen by the Russian Space Agency. Brightman, 52, refused to confirm how much she had paid for the privilege but reports in the US claimed the singer had shelled out a staggering $51 million (£31 million).

The soprano will embark on a six-month training programme at the Star City cosmonaut training centre in Moscow in 2014. The launch date for the missing is believed to be at some point that year.

Ms Brightman will spend two weeks orbiting the earth and hopes to become the first musician to sing from space during her mission. She will become the eight space tourist to visit the ISS. The most recent paying passenger on a Soyuz was Canadian Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, who paid $35 million to fly in 2009.
