Ex-Daio Paper chief gets prison term over 5.5 bil. yen in losses
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Former Daio Paper Corp. Chairman Mototaka Ikawa was sentenced to four years in prison Wednesday by the Tokyo District Court for causing 5.53 billion yen in losses to seven subsidiaries after spending the firms' money at casinos.
Ikawa, the 48-year-old grandson of the papermaker's founder, was charged with aggravated breach of trust for instructing senior officials of the group companies to transfer the money to his personal bank account between March and September 2011, resulting in the losses.
"It was a pernicious offense in which he abused his dominant position and authority as well as betraying the trust placed in him," the court said in the ruling.
The court accused Ikawa of acting irresponsibly in attempting to cover his losses from gambling, taking the accumulation of debts lightly and mixing public and private matters.
Ikawa's defense counsel immediately appealed to the Tokyo High Court, having sought leniency during the trial given that Ikawa had pleaded guilty and finished compensating for damage caused to the companies. The prosecution had sought a six-year prison term.
Daio Paper said in a statement, "We will continue to do our utmost to improve corporate governance."
According to the prosecutors and the defendant's statements during the trial, Ikawa started borrowing money from the maker of Elleair brand tissue paper in May 2010 to cover debts from baccarat, which he began playing over 10 years ago. The debts snowballed as he attempted to recover his losses, spending almost all of the borrowed money in casinos in Macao and Singapore.
