Anti-Japanese mob attacks American ambassador’s car in Beijing
The United States has tried to stay out of the current Sino-Japanese tensions, but the anti-Japanese rioters in Beijing don’t seem to care about that. Yesterday, they attacked the car carrying American Ambassador Gary Locke:
Locke was unhurt in the incident and Chinese security personnel stationed outside of the embassy cleared the demonstrators from the scene after they surrounded the vehicle, Barkhouse said in a telephone interview. Locke was in the car at the time, the ambassador’s official Cadillac limousine flying the U.S. flag, said a U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
No more than 20 people surrounded the car, causing damage that one would have to look closely to notice, the U.S. official said. Some of the people had Chinese flags and looked to be leaving demonstrations taking place that day at the nearby Japanese embassy, the official said.
The incident comes less than a month after Chinese nationalists attacked the Japanese Ambassador’s car in Beijing.
The incident highlights the dangerous situation in China. Many nationalist protesters seem willing to shift their attacks to other foreigner targets when they are unable to smash or attack Japanese targets. For example, the recent anti-Japanese rioting included vandalism of Rolex and Samsung shops.
