Climate MARCH MADNESS
This year’s late winter heat wave over much of the United States, dubbed “March Madness,” has been cited as evidence that human-induced global warming is causing the climate system to stray far outside its normal range of variability. The thousands of all-time high temperature records shattered during last month’s climate rampage have been likened to homerun records shattered by a baseball player on steroids.

March Madnessはas mad as March haresから来ている慣用表現です。３月はノウサギ(hare)はノウサギの発情期であり、「狂乱した」様子を表しています。ルイス・キャロルの『不思議の国のアリス』にも３月ウサギが出てきていますね (ディズニーでは「マーチ・ヘアー」というキャラクターだそうです)。
この記事では、今年の３月に竜巻等の異常気象が目立ったアメリカの最高気温を更新した件数を"March Madness"と表現しているようです。(Minnesota)
