Kan going to Davos “to be seen with successful people”.

2011年01月26日
PM Kan, still apparently oblivious to Japan’s debt and deficit crisis, has decided to jet off to Davos, Switzerland for the annual convention of the global elite. So what determines who is considered the global elite?
The minimum price for admission to the conference is $50,000 for a membership to the World Economic Forum plus a $20,000 ticket to the conference so $70,000 before trying to get a hotel room at a place you won’t be embarrassed to mention to the other guests. Getting to Davos is also a nightmare at the best of times but worth it for the skiing, if not the schmoozing. In short, it’s group of people who have at least $80,000 to blow on a weekend sitting around discussing the problems ordinary folks like themselves face in the ever-changing global economy.

Of course, since Kan is a man of the people, he could not afford to go to this event except for being able to spend the Japanese taxpayer money. It must be gratifying for the Japanese to know that they have elevated Kan to the status of “global elite”. $80,000 might not save the welfare system, but we are sure that 4 or 5 or maybe even 6 unemployed Japanese families would be happy to split that money between themselves for a year.
