NAGASAKI -- Police were investigating a 27-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting a 23-year-old woman when the man allegedly stabbed the woman's mother and grandmother in Saikai, Nagasaki Prefecture, on Dec. 16, investigators say.
Nagasaki Prefectural Police arrested the man, identified as Gota Tsutsui, on Dec. 17 on suspicion of killing Mitsuko Yamashita, 56, and her 77-year-old mother-in-law Hisae.
Investigators say the fatal stabbings occurred while Chiba Prefectural Police were probing Tsutsui on suspicion of assaulting the 23-year-old woman living in Chiba Prefecture after receiving a report from her 58-year-old father Makoto. The woman's identity has been withheld.
Makoto initially contacted Saikai Police Station on Oct. 29 to say that his daughter in Chiba appeared to be the target of assaults and threats from her former boyfriend. Nagasaki Prefectural Police then alerted Chiba Prefectural Police's Narashino Police Station, which summoned Tsutsui on Oct. 30 and got assurances from him that he would never assault or contact her again, according to the sources.
But investigators say Tsutsui continued to send her threatening e-mails, prompting Narashino Police Station in Chiba to issue another warning to the man over the phone on Nov. 1.
Makoto and his daughter visited Narashino Police Station on Dec. 6 to explain about the suspect's alleged assaults against her. Three days later, police warned him again and he returned to his house in Mie Prefecture, the sources say.
On Dec. 12, Makoto filed a damage complaint, saying his daughter suffered injuries due to Tsutsui's assaults, and Chiba police accepted the report on Dec. 14 and launched an investigation.
According to Chiba police, the woman first met the suspect in the summer of 2010 and they started dating in late February this year. Investigative sources say Tsutsui has been arrested on suspicion of stalking another person in a separate case.
Chiba police said, "We were investigating the assault case while prioritizing the woman's protection, but it was very regrettable that the precious lives of two people were lost."
