本日の朝のNHKラジオで仕入れた情報です。東南アジアの国々ではお手伝いさん（maid）を雇う伝統があります。シンガポールもそのひとつで、多くはインドネシア、タイ、ミャンマーなどからやってきています。月給は月３万円から５万円ですが、それぞれの国の貨幣価値に換算すると高給となるので、maid志願者はとぎれることがありません。ところがシンガポールでは最近、雇い主の現金や貴金属を盗んだり、child abuseをしたり、高層階から飛び降りたりするmaidが増えて、社会問題になっているそうです。ここにあるjust ~ intoはとても英語的な表現で、「仕事をはじめてたった４日しかたっていない」ことを的確に伝えています。（ゼミ生 カメ女）

Yet another maid has fallen to her death from a Housing Board flat, a coroner's court heard on Thursday.

Ms Suryatiningsih, 28, an Indonesian, died on July 23 after falling 13 floors while trying to bring in laundry. She was just four days into her job at Block 47, Jalan Tiga.

Between 2006 and last year, 27 maids died from 'fall from height'. The figure includes accidental falls and suicides.

Ms Suryatiningsih, married with a nine-year-old child, had worked here for four years from 2006 before going home.
