Hot Stove League

12月になり国内外のプロ野球（大リーグ等）はシーズンオフを迎えています。「オフ，オフシーズン」などの言葉は日本語でもよく使われるようになっていますが，野球に関しては違った言い方もあるようです。

They call the baseball off-season the "Hot Stove League" but, this winter, it might be called the "Overheated Stove" or the "Microwave League." 今回の表現はHot Stove Leagueです。hot stoveは「ストーブ」，Leagueは「同盟，リーグ」という意味ですが，俗語で「野球談議をする人達」のことを指すようです。この語源は，野球の試合が無くなる冬季に，野球ファンたちがストーブを囲んで，選手の移籍・契約更改・引退などの話をする様子から。という記述がありました。（英辞郎on the WEB）
今年は震災の影響でプロ野球もシーズン終了が11月下旬まで延び，移籍の話題が12月になって本格化してきています。今年は注目選手が多数国内外に移籍する予定とあって，記事ではHot Stove Leagueを上回るOverheated Stove LeagueやMicrowave Leagueなどとも言われています。今オフの移籍がどうなるか野球ファンとしては結果が待ち遠しい限りです。（GP）
