Proxemics

〈Summary〉
Proxemics is the study of spatial distances between individuals in different cultures and situations.
(Every)Each person is surrounded by a psychological bubble of space. The bubble contracts and expands depending on the person’s cultural background, emotional state, and the activity in which he or she is participating in.

Culture has an effect on how people perceive themselves in space and how they use space.

・Italians, Russians, Spaniards, Latin Americans, Middle Easterners, French… prefer close personal contact
・Northern Europeans, Scandinavians, Germans… avoid touching and close contact

There are four classifications (that) which are person’s spatial needs.
Intimate distance: private activities
Personal distance: comfort bubble
Social distance : business transactions and casual social exchanges
Public distance : public speaking

This is my experience that I had in the Odakyu line. I (am using) use the Odakyu line. One day, I was (on) in a train and it was very crowded. I felt uncomfortable because people were too close. When I learned Proxemics, I came up with this experience, and I was surprised that this experience (is) was proved by the study. After reading Proxemics, I learned that strangers tended to avoid other people and (are) be away from them to keep comfortable distance (from Proxemics).
