別れるならきれいさっぱり make a clean break

昨日（8日）のＤＹ社説Noda should ditch denuclearization policyから英語表現を拾います。新たな日本のリーダー・野田佳彦首相の福島第一原子力発電所への対策はどうなるのでしょうか。以下は記事の一部抜粋です。

A stable supply of electricity and other kinds of energy is critical for maintaining the amenities of daily life.
However, electricity shortages have become protracted because the restart of nuclear power reactors that have been suspended for regular inspections appears unlikely in the foreseeable future, due to the effects of the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda described electricity as "the blood of economy" and indicated he wants idle reactors restarted if their safety is confirmed. We applaud Noda's realistic stance. He is distinctively different from former Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who suddenly declared Japan would break away from its dependence on nuclear power generation.
However, Noda has not yet clarified his opinion on whether the nation should keep using nuclear plants in the future. At this juncture, the prime minister should make a clean break from his predecessor's simplistic denuclearization policy.

今回取り上げるのはmake a clean breakです。よくtake a breakはしますが，make a clean breakはどうでしょか。breakを辞書で引くと「（関係などの）終わり，絶縁，断絶」（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』学研教育出版，第４版），

とあります。辞書の例文を見るとSometimes it’s better to make a clean break. (ときにはきっぱり切れる〔関係を断つ〕ほうがよい)のように使用されています（同上）。
社説中では，野田首相の原発対策は前菅首相のもとは違うものが良いということをmake a clean breakを用いて述べています。（ゼミ生 Shohei）
