不戦勝だからさよなら bye

本日のDYから気になった表現を取り上げます。Sportsの 欄にはJamaica’s Mullings　finds stride with a little helpというタイトルで，ジャマイカの陸上競技短距離界について述べられています。以下は記事の一部抜粋です。

The national trials in late June guarantee an awesome display of speed with six Jamaicans-Mullings, Bolt, Nesta Carter, Powell, Frater and Nickel Ashmeade-currently ranked among the year’s top 18 in the 100.

Bolt has a bye as the reigning world champion, but the other five will be vying for three spots on the Jamaican team.

今回取り上げるのはbyeです。Bye bye.でお馴染みのbyeですが，今回の記事中ではどうでしょうか。辞書の引き甲斐がありそうです。早速辞書を手に取り調べたところ，「3（トーナメントで）不戦勝の人[組]；不戦勝」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』大修館書店，第４版）。さらに英英辞書のLDOCEを見ると，

a situation in a sports competition in which a player or a team does not have an opponent to play against and continues to the next part of the competition

と「不戦勝」の英語定義が載っていました。記事に戻ると，ジャマイカの短距離選手のなかでボルト選手は世界チャンピオンのため「不戦勝」となり，他の選手は国内の試合で残り三つのリレーメンバーのいすを争わなければならない，という意味になります。
ジャマイカは陸上競技界において上位を占めるチームです。今年の世界陸上でもその活躍はかなりのものとなるでしょう。（ゼミ生 Shohei）
