同等 par

本日のTHE DAILY YOMIURIの社説（EDITORIAL）には今年の大学生の就職活動について取りあげられています。就職氷河期といわれる今日。不安な日々が続きます。今回はその記事からの英単語“par”をご紹介します。

Even before the massive quake occurred, the government had been asking employers to treat those who graduated from college in the last three years on a par with new graduates. We hope companies will give sufficient job opportunities to those who have already graduated.

このparを辞書で調べると，「U [時にa par]同等，同位，等価」とあります。英英辞書のLDOCEを引くと以下のように定義と例文が記載されています。

1 be on a par (with sth)
to be at the same level or standard

The wages of clerks were on a par with those of manual workers.

「同等」を意味するpar。本文を見てみると “treat those who graduated from college in the last three years on a par with new graduates”とあり，「過去三年で卒業した人も新卒と同等に扱う」という意味で使われています。企業に採用の応募対象者の枠を広げるようよびかけた政策ですね。
