今月２２日に日中韓首脳会談が行われ，中国の温家宝首相と韓国のイ・ミョンバク大統領は日本の福島第一原発事故の安全強化に協力することの意向を伝えました。The Japan Times Online（05/23/11付け）にも関連した記事がありました。以下は記事のタイトルと一部抜粋です。

今回注目するのは「forestall」です。抜粋した記事の内容から，forestallは「防ぐ」という意味ではないかと予測しました。辞書には「・・・に先んじる、・・・の機先を制する（prevent）」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。そこでpreventとforestallの意味の違いを明確にするためLDOCEでこれらの単語をひいてみると，preventはto stop something from happening, or stop someone from doing somethingとあり，forestallはto prevent something from happening or prevent someone from doing something by doing something firstとありました。したがって，preventに対してforestallは先に何か行動をおこして，何かが起こるのを「（未然に）防ぐ」という意味になります。今回の韓国と中国の支援の決定は私たち日本人にとっても心強いことです。（ゼミ生　To To To）
