tittle-tattle

以下はMail Online(05/20/11付け)からの一部引用です。

For we are born to gossip, it seems. The human brain has evolved to thrive on tittle-tattle – and the cattier the better, scientists say.
In fact, exchanging juicy information about other people’s lives is a quick way to distinguish friends from foe and helps protect us from harm.

またMacmillian Online Dictionaryによるとtittle-tattleはtalk about what someone else is doing, especially when it is not true or accurateと定義されており,tattleはto tell someone that another person has done something bad, usually in order to get them into trouble. This word is used mainly by children or when speaking to children.
