東日本大震災を受けて不通となっていたJR石巻線が19日，一部区間で運転を再開しました。DY ONLINE（05/20/11付け）の記事"Part of Ishinomaki Line back up"から落ち穂拾いです（以下記事一部引用）。
ISHINOMAKI, Miyagi--Train service resumed Thursday between Maeyachi and Ishinomaki stations, both in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, more than two months after it was halted by the March 11 disaster.
People can now travel by train from central Ishinomaki to Sendai, although part of the journey requires a round about detour inland.
The direct coastal route on the JR Ishinomaki Line stretching from Onagawa Station in Onagawacho to Higashi-Shiogama Station in Shiogama, both in the prefecture, is still stopped.

今回はdetourについて考えます。まず英和辞典と英英辞典を調べると次のようにありました。
・「【フランス語'turn aside'の意から】遠回り，回り道，迂回路」（『新英和中辞典』第5版，研究社）
・a longer route that you take in order to avoid a problem or to visit a place（『OXFORD現代英英辞典』第6版，Oxford University Press）
これらのことからalthough以下の訳は「内陸部を迂回する必要があるが」あたりが適当かと思います。
次に語源辞典（スペースアルク）で語源を調べました。
［語源］de(=away) = turn aside（＝離れて回る）
【語根】tour-, torn-
【語根の基のラテン語(L.)】L.tornare = to turn（回る）
補足になりますが，文中のroundaboutという語は「回り道の，遠回りの」を意味する形容詞です。また名詞として「回転木馬」や「環状交差点，ロータリー」という意味も持ちます（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第3版，大修館書店）。detourとあわせて覚えておきたいですね。（ゼミ生 pear）
