東日本大震災を受けて，女性たちの結婚意識が急激に高まっているようです。以下はThe Asahi Shimbun（05/15/11付け）の"Great disaster prompts more women to seek marriage"という記事から一部引用です。

"More inquiries started coming in the immediate aftermath of the quake," said Hiromi Furusawa, an official at the agency's Osaka-kita branch. "We are seeing a 20 percent to a 30 percent increase in the number of people becoming our members compared with the past."

今回注目するのはaftermathです。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第3版，大修館書店）には，「1 ［通例the/an〜］（災害・戦争などの）余波，結果；（災害などの）直後の時期，2 二番狩り」とあり，in the aftermath of the earthquake「地震の直後に」という例文も載っていました。よって，「（東北地方太平洋沖）地震の直後からより多くの問い合わせが寄せられ始めた」といった訳が適当かと思います。

ここで「余波」という言葉からafter(-)effectという語も想起されたのでこれについても調べてみることにしました。すると，「1 余波，なごり，2 〔医〕（薬などの）あと作用［効果］；（病気などの）後遺症」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』同上）。念のため，『OXFORD現代英英辞典』（第6版，Oxford University Press）でaftermathとafter(-)effectの両方を調べて，細かな意味あいの違いを次のとおりだとわかりました。

aftermath: the situation that exists as a result of an important (and usually unpleasant) event, especially a war, an accident, etc

after(-)effect: the after(-)effects of a drug, an ilness or an unpleasant event are the feelings that you experience later as a result of it

この英英の説明から，aftermathは戦争や地震などによる余波，after(-)effectは薬や病気などの余波であることがはっきりとわかります。（ゼミ生 pear）
