海外に行く際に，ガイドブックを持っていく方は多いのではないかと思います。日本人では『地球の歩き方』を旅先の必需品とする人が多いのではないでしょうか。ではみなさんは，Lonely Planetという英語のガイドブックをご存知でしょうか。以下はMail Online（05/11/11付け）Lonely Planetについての記事の一部引用です。

The guide, which boasts of a ‘no-holds-barred view’, is regarded as one of the most authoritative books for travellers, 100,000 of whom are expected to buy it.
Lonely Planet concedes that many parts of Great Britain are still ‘great’, and that it is still one of the most fascinating places in the world to explore.
The guide said London had excellent restaurants with many free attractions for children, while Edinburgh was ‘one of the world’s most fascinating cities’ and Manchester was ‘truly special’.

注目したのはno-holds-barredです。辞書にはwith no holds barredで「制限なしで，したい放題で」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第3版，大修館書店）。Cambridge Dictionaries Onlineにはwithout any limits or controlsと定義されています。このイディオムはスポーツのレスリングで，相手がギブアップするような関節技や絞め技が禁止されていることが由来のようです。私はこのLonely Planetというガイドブックを知らなかったのですが，英語による旅行ガイドブックのシェアは世界一だそうです。次回海外に行く時にはこのガイドブックを使ってみようと思います。（ゼミ生 b.m.）
