世界遺産に日本の平泉（岩手県平泉町）と小笠原諸島（東京都）が加わる期待が高まっています。以下はThe Asahi Shimbun（05/08/11付け）の"Hiraizumi, Ogasawara Group win World Heritage endorsement"という記事から一部引用です。

Dubbed the "Galapagos of the Orient," the Ogasawara group is home to an abundance of shellfish and plant species that underwent unique evolutionary processes. The World Heritage recommendation calls for measures to protect endemic species against alien species to be continued after the proposed inscription.

今回はdubに注目します。この語は「〜と呼ぶ」や「〜にあだ名をつける」という意味で知られています。しかし英和辞典の訳だけではわからない細かな意味合いを知りたいと思い，『OXFORD現代英英辞典』（第6版，Oxford University Press）を調べることにしました。そこには次のように載っていました。

to give sb/sth a particular name, often in a humorous or critical way

このことから，「ユーモアや批評に基づく独特な名前付け」ということがポイントの表現だとわかります。実際に小笠原諸島はその生物種の多様性から，珍しい動物が多く見られる本家のガラパゴス諸島になぞらえて「東洋のガラパゴス」と呼ばれています。
