Abstract:
Language teachers have traditionally viewed grammar as the 'meat and potatoes' of our students' language learning diet. However, many language researchers and teachers are now coming to view vocabulary, not grammar, as the main nutrient that feeds language proficiency. As they remind us, 'With no grammar you can say very little; with no
vocabulary, you can say nothing.' In this session we will consider some relevant issues related to vocabulary learning and teaching in general, and English vocabulary specifically. Then we will look at some principles that can guide us in presenting vocabulary and designing vocabulary activities for the classroom.
Speaker (biodata): Steven Gershon has been teaching in Japan for nearly 25 years and is
currently a professor at J. F. Oberlin University where he teaches TEFL and Course Design for undergraduate and post-graduate students. He has written numerous ELT coursebooks and presents widely throughout Asia at ELT conferences.
Note: This event is free for Sophia University Faculty and Students.
