世界中がRoyal Weddingで盛り上がっていた日，アメリカでは歌手のマライア・キャリーが双子を出産しました。以下はMirrorのonline版（05/02/11付け）からの引用です。

Mariah went into labour on Saturday and was rushed to hospital by her husband Nick Cannon, who apparently got in such a flap he went to the wrong part of the building. We'll have no more talk of flaps in this story, and that's a promise.
For those that like to know details, the ickle baby girl was born first, weighing 5lbs 3oz and her brother made an appearance just after, weighing in at 5lbs 6oz… those details make us wince.

注目したのはflapです。flapと聞くと，「（旗などが）パタパタと揺れる」という動詞の意味で知られているかとおもいます。しかし今回は名詞の意味で使われていることが，文章からもわかります。そこで辞書を引いてみると,「狼狽［パニック］状態」と載っています（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第3版，大修館書店）。例として，get in ［into］ a flapは「あわてふためく」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』同上）。旦那さんであるニックは違う建物に行ってしまったとも記事には書いてあります。「パタパタ」ではなく「バタバタ」した様子が伝わってきました。すごく慌てていたのですね。（ゼミ生 b.m.）
