nuggetのfollow-up

アメリカプロバスケットボールリーグNBAで，今年最も注目の新人といえば，誰もがLos Angels ClippersのBlake Griffin選手を挙げると思います。彼は208センチという長身には似つかわしくない運動能力とテクニックで，今季すでに46回のdouble-double（1試合で得点とリバウンド数が二ケタになること）を達成するなど，期待通りの大活躍をしています。Japan Times onlineのスポーツ欄にあった記事Apache coach Hill helped prepare Griffin for NBAからの引用です。
Neither did I until legendary hoop scribe Peter Vecsey of the New York Post sent me a recent e-mail, detailing how Tokyo Apache coach Bob Hill worked with Griffin in his pre-NBA days and taught him the finer points of ball handling and how to pull off this astonishingly tough task.
(I must admit I was thrilled to receive this juicy nugget of information and just as eager to surprise Hill with questions about it.)

以前ブログでnuggetに「貴重な[役に立つ]情報」（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）という意味があることを採り上げましたが，そのnuggetに関するfollow-upです。

そもそもこのnuggetは「（貴金属の）塊；天然の金塊」という意味があり，そこから転じて「（少量の）価値あるもの」という意味を持つようになったと考えられます（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。また，以前に採り上げた際に「（チキン）ナゲット」を連想させるとcamelくんが書いていましたが，今回はjuicy nugget of informationのように，その「（チキン）ナゲット」に掛けてjuicyが使われているのも面白い点です。
さらに，以前のnuggets of detailや同時書にあったnuggets of information（価値ある情報）という使用例，そして今回の引用から，とりわけ情報（information）との連結がいいということもわかります。
今，NBAは前半が終了し，All Starゲームの真っ最中です。Griffin選手もルーキーながらAll Starに選出されています。どのような活躍を見せるのか楽しみです。（院生 小山本）
