本日のThe Mainichi Daily News（02/02/11付け）にあったToyota Prius cedes Japan car market leadership to Honda Fit in Jan.という記事から英語の表現を探ります。20ヶ月以上自動車月間売り上げ首位を守ってきたTOYOTAのPriusがHondaのFitに一位の座を譲ることとなりました。
While sales of the Prius began falling year on year after the government subsidy program to promote eco-friendly car purchases ended in September, Fit sales have been robust due to the launch in October of a hybrid model with a starting price of 1.59 million yen, the most inexpensive in Japan among vehicles powered by electric motors and gasoline.
The sales rankings do not include minicars, but the Fit is likely to have become the front-runner in January for the first time since December 2007 even if minivehicle data are included, the sources said.

今回取り上げる表現はfront-runnerです。辞書で意味を調べてみると「トップに立っている走者［競走馬］, 逃げ馬, 先行馬.」という他に「（…の）最有力［優勝］候補｟for ...｠.」という意味が存在しました（『プログレッシブ英和辞典』小学館）。まだ集計の最終結果が出ていないので，現段階ではFitが一月の売り上げ月間首位「最有力候補」であると記事は報じています。首位を明け渡したPriusとようやく首位に立ったFitのさらなる熾烈な戦いが今後予想できそうです。
もし優勝が確実視されている場合であったならばfront-runnerではなくてshoo-inという単語がぴったりあてはまるのではないでしょうか。shoo-inには「《米》楽勝が予想される候補［馬］，本命」という意味があります（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。両方の単語ともに競馬と関係しているのも面白いと思いました。（ゼミ生 camel）
